Eric Stoakes ran for 113 yards, including a 22-yard touchdown in the second quarter, as Gladbrook-Reinbeck avenged its only regular-season loss from a year ago by beating Union Community 13-6 on Friday night.
The Rebels, ranked No. 1 in the Des Moines Register's preseason poll, struck first on Jake Schuman's fourth-down touchdown pass to Colton Dinsdale, which covered 9 yards. Walker Thede's point-after kick made it 7-0 G-R amid the downpour.
Stoakes made it 13-0 with his touchdown dash early in the second period, but Union pulled back to within a score on Isaiah Vaughn's 2-yard touchdown plunge.
Neither team tallied points in the second half as Gladbrook-Reinbeck prevailed.
G-R outgained the Knights 244-147. Vaughn rushed for 73 yards to lead Union.
