Girls flying high at 9-1

January 8, 2016

The new year brought the first loss of the season for the Union Knights girls basketball team, which reeled off nine straight wins to open their 2015-16 campaign.

The 36-38 loss to Waverly-Shell Rock represents the closes contest the girls have played to date - all nine of their wins came by at least five points and as many as 35.

With the way this year's squad has been playing, the sky is the limit, not only for this season, but for 2016-17. Nearly all - 9 of 11, to be exact - of this year's Knights are juniors.

Kaeli Block has been leading Union with 12 points per game and is also the team's leading rebounder with 5.1 rebounds per game. Block - true to her name - also has 11 blocks on the season, a team high.

Courtney Powell, averaging just under 10 PPG, is also recording a team-high 3.1 assists per game and a staggering 5.1 steals per game, among the highest in the state of Iowa.

Maggie Driscol (6.9 PPG, 2.7 RPG), Jackie Barz (6.2 PPG, 3 RPG) and the duo of Jordyn and Justine Nagel (6 PPG and 5.1 PPG, respectively) have also been key components of the Knights' success this season. Peyton Parker has also been a force to be reckoned with on the boards, averaging 4.4 RPG.

The girls host back-to-back home contests against Dike-New Hartford and Sumner-Fredricksburg on Friday, January 8 and Tuesday, January 12, respectively. Tipoff for both contests is slated for 6:15 p.m. in La Porte City.
