The Dengler Domain: Convertibles

June 3, 2016
Sean Dengler - Columnist , Dysart Reporter

The humidity rises, the sun sticks around, and the corn and beans grows. The greatest part of life is happening. It is summer! Summer makes everyone go outside and enjoy the beautiful weather. Whether it spending time at the pool, playing sports, or enjoying the amazing summer nights, there is another lesser known alternative to enjoy summers. Driving through the streets in a top down convertible. Wind blowing though hair, and having no cares in the world are produced by riding in a convertible. This vehicle provides a great way to cut loose, and after doing research on older convertibles, I have my favorites.

This 1957 Chevrolet Corvette is a beauty. This vehicle looks like it flies anywhere at the speed of the light. Racing around the roads would be a lot of fun with its top down. While not easy on the wallet, at least once driving this speedster car would be fun. The outside paneling of the Corvette makes it look and go fast. No part of this car speaks the words, "I am slow." While I found mostly pictures of red Corvettes, I prefer the black Corvette. Driving a red Corvette creates a problem. Every police officer's sixth sense will become heightened when this beast of a vehicle is set loose on the road.

This is a 1970 Plymouth Barracuda. That is 'Cuda, for short. What an amazing nickname and no other car name can rival it. I was unaware of the 'Cuda existing before my research. While the purple 'Cuda is rare, to even use this color is bold. This car would be fun to cruise around with the top down. It has the muscle to go with the angry looking grill. The 'Cuda is meant to peel out on cement and raise up a storm. Many young lads must have enjoyed this car years ago.

While this 1967 Ford Fairlane Convertible is not as exciting as the other convertibles, it gets the job done. This momma bear car takes good care of its passengers, and it gets everyone to their stop. Though not as crisp as the other two cars, the Fairlane is a classy vehicle. The slow, melodic feel of the car are positives. The Fairlane has its drawbacks, but being pulled over, is not one of them. Speed is on the back burner with this convertible. The Fairlane appears to be all about relaxing and enjoying the ride.

All three of these vehicles would be fun cars to drive. Only one of these cars is my favorite. Drum roll, please. It is the Corvette, of course. Nothing beats the look of this ultra-fast, ultra-beautiful looking piece of vehicle engineering. While I will never own this car, everyone should go find a convertible owner and persuade them to let you drive it. Let the hair fly, and enjoy a nice summer drive on me.
