Union traveled to Cresco to take on the Cadets at 7 p.m. on Friday night. Cresco won their district and Union placed second in arguably the best district in 2A football this year.
Union kicked off and Crestwood drove the ball behind the running force of Spencer Cuvelier (6'3 230lbs) who rushed for 146 yards in 23 carries and two TDs.
His first TD came on the first drive of the game from five yards out. Crestwood went up 7-0 after extra point.
Union responded with a drive of it's own and sophomore Brit Rolison popped at 59 yard run behind the Knight offensive line.
The Cadets again went back to their run game and Cuvelier as he scored again from two yards out. A great rush by the Knight PAT block unit forced the kick to be wide right. The Cadets went up 13-7.
Again in the second quarter the Knights mixed it up and converted on a key pass from Troy Hanus to Koby Alpers from 27 yards out for a TD to make it 13-13.
Hora made the PAT and the Knights went up 14-13 as the Knight defense held and it was halftime.
The Knights defense played up in the second half allowing zero points from Crestwood. They were led by UNI commit Brock Hadachek who had nine tackles (1.5 sacks) and a big game from senior captain Michael Ahrendsen who dominated the line of scrimmage all night long. Ahrendsen had eight tackles and 2.5 sacks. Quentin Kinsel also showed a strong performance with seven tackles followed by Dylan Stech and Alpers with six. The Union defense came up big with three turnovers including Tate Hookham's fumble recovery and interceptions in the fourth quarter by seniors Clayton Thiele and Brady Rempe.
Offensively the Knights scored twice in the third period with Dakota Hora hitting a 37 yard field goal and Isaiah Vaughan running for a 12 yard TD off tackle. The end of the third period
it was 24-13. Rolison sealed the game with several runs including a 10 yard outside play in the fourth quarter. The final score after Hora's PATs, Union 31, Crestwood 13. Crestwood finished 7-3 on the season. Union now has an overall record of 9-1 with the lone loss coming to #1 ranked North Fayette Valley.
Offensively junior Troy Hanus (Hahn-us) was 11 of 17 with one TD and John Boisen had four catches for 22 yards, while Alpers had five for 78 yards and one TD. Vaughan and
senior Ryan Miller each had a catch. In the rushing department, Vaughan had 24 carries for 91 yards and one TD while Rolison had 10 carries for 112 yards and two TDs.
Speciality team wise Boisen punted the ball four times for a 35.3 average while Hora kicked off six times for 313 yards as he continues to lead the state (2A) in kickoffs and PATs.
Dakota was three for three on PATs with one fieldgoal.
The Knights travel to West Union for a rematch with #1 rated North Fayette Valley who beat New Hampton Friday night and raised their record to 10-0. Game time is 7pm.
