Nadine L. Oehler, 91, of North Liberty died peacefully Monday, March 6, 2017 at the Bird House, The Hospice Home of Johnson County.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Nadine's life will be at 2:00 pm, Saturday, April 1, 2017 at Lensing Funeral Home, Iowa City, with Pastor Sherry Lohman officiating. A private reception for family and close friends will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Bird House.
Nadine was born March 31, 1925 to Wesley J. and Ella E. (Schmidt) Lindeman of Dysart, Iowa, the youngest of three daughters. She graduated from Dysart High School in 1943. She attended Iowa State Teacher's College and the University of Iowa where she received her B.A. in 1947. She became a Home Economics teacher. She taught at Marengo High School in 1947 and 1948. On August 8, 1948 Nadine married Jay C. Oehler at the First United Evangelical Church in Dysart, Iowa. She taught at West Liberty High School in 1949 and 1950, until starting a family in 1951.
Nadine went back to teaching in 1970 and taught at West Branch High School for 19 years until 1989. She was a long-term resident of Iowa City from 1945-1996 at which time she and Jay moved to North Liberty.
Nadine was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was a supportive partner with her husband in starting schools and programs for the handicapped in Johnson County. From a one-room school house to Nelson School and later Systems Unlimited and Goodwill Industries in Iowa City.
Nadine is survived by her children, Susan Clayton of Brooklyn, NY and John Oehler of West Bloomfield, MI; three grandchildren, Emily Clayton, Ryan and Rachel Oehler. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jay, her daughters, Jane and Christine, her son-in-law, Charles and her daughter-in-law, Janet.
