Betty Lou was born February 7, 1924, in Dysart, Iowa, the daughter of Louis and Elsie Novak. She attended the Dysart school system and graduated from High School with the Class of 1941. Betty attended the University of Northern Iowa, and following graduation taught in country schools for two years, then, for two more years in Clutier. On September 25, 1946, she married Melvin Kupka in Cedar Rapids. Betty and Mel lived in the Dysart area where he began his banking interests and Betty was Director of Clutier State Bank and the National Bank of Dysart.
In 1974, Betty and Mel moved to Traer where she was active in several clubs, including her membership in the Traer U.P.C. She did pottery, painting, interior decorating, and ceramics. Betty's became a resident of the Traer Care Center in 2012, following a decline in her health.
Betty passed away at Sunrise Hill Care Center of Traer on Saturday, March 18, 2017, at the age of 93 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mel; and a sister. Betty is survived by a daughter, Lou Kupka-Schutt of Anacortes, Washington.
