Donald Meggers, 86, of Hudson died Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City. He was born on the family farm on January 27, 1931, son of Franz and Elsie (Hagge) Meggers. Don was married to Betty Kutin on June 7, 1953, at Ripley Congregational Church in Traer.

Don enjoyed "growing things". He had several vegetable gardens and was proud of his blueberry patch. Don always loved having people come and pick blueberries. He was a firm believer that no one should be hungry, and donated produce to the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.

Don enjoyed watching the birds and always anticipated the different seasons which brought different birds to his feeders. He had a passion for cardinals, Baltimore orioles and hummingbirds. Don had many a laugh watching the antics of the squirrels.

Don's favorites included: anything made from his blueberries; cherry pie; fresh asparagus; cherry tomatoes; surveying his "kingdom" on his "chariot"; the TV series M*A*S*H; eating homegrown peaches right off the tree; and the color and fragrance of the Tropicana rose.

Don loved boating on the Mississippi River and the company of the "6H" Yacht Club members. He was known for his "slum" breakfasts made on the sand bar in a huge cast iron skillet. He spent a lot of hours fishing with his wife.

He loved his family and always enjoyed their visits and watching the grandchildren grow.

Don is survived by his wife, Betty; son, Nolan (Carol) Meggers of Beaver Dam, WI; 4 grandchildren: Joshua (Danielle) Meggers of Grundy Center, Colleen (Adam) Wuesthoff of Beaver Dan, WI, Brett & Jay Meggers of Aurora, CO; a daughter-in-law, Diane Meggers of Buckingham; great-granddaughter, Zooey Meggers of Grundy Center; a brother, Leslie (Linda) Meggers of Traer; a sister-in-law, Alice (Kutin) Lass of Traer; 4 nephews: Mike Meggers of Traer, Joel (Monica) Meggers of CO, Tim (Kim) Meggers of Grimes, and Charles (Bette) Kutin of Marion; and 5 nieces: Susan Meggers of New York City, Phyillis Kutin of Nevada, Joyce (Rick) Filosi of Cedar Rapids, Julianna and Karensue (Paul Burroughs) of Traer.
