Donald G. Hanus, 89, passed away on Monday, July 31, 2017 at Covenant Medical Center. Visitation will be held at Overton Funeral Home in Dysart on Sunday, August 6, 2017 from 2 to 5 p.m. with a service at St. Paul Catholic Church in Traer on Monday, August 7, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. Rosary service will be held on Sunday prior to the visitation (1:45 p.m.) and burial will follow the service on Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Dysart.

Donald George Hanus was born on April 22, 1928, near Traer, the son of Vencil and Anna (Kaufman) Hanus. He attended rural school and graduated from Traer High School in 1946. Donald served in the military from 1951 to 1953 in Alaska. On June 15, 1953, he was united in marriage to Loretta Byrnes. The couple farmed and lived on the same farm throughout their marriage. Donald retired in 1992. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dysart until its closing and then became a member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Traer. He was a member of the K.D. Lodge #130, the American Legion, and Farm Bureau. Donald was a private pilot and a member of the Iowa Flying Farmers Association. After retirement, he enjoyed gardening, taking care of the yard, riding his motorcycle, and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Donald died at the age of 89 on Monday, July 31, 2017, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a brother, Melvin; a brother in infancy,Leonard; a daughter, Coleen; and a brother-in-law, Don Pecenka. Donald is survived by two sons, Daryl (Florence) Hanus of Traer and Neil (Misty) Hanus of Traer; a daughter, Denise (Greg) Peterson of Belleville, Illinois; two brothers, Gary (Linda) Hanus of Cedar Falls and Stanley (Janice) Hanus of Iowa Falls; a sister, Dorothy Pecenka of Traer; three grandchildren, Nathan (Holly) Hanus, Maureen (Boyd) Johanningmeier, and Courtney (Tyler) Sisson; and five great grandchildren, Seth and Evan Hanus and Madyson, Austin, and Brooklyn Johanningmeier.
