Church of Promise celebrates anniversary Dec. 3

December 1, 2017
Dysart Reporter

Church of Promise began as a group of neighbors in rural Buckingham meeting together for worship, just as the pioneers had before church buildings were erected. They first began meeting in a park in 1997, but then as the weather turned cooler they took turns meeting in their homes and leading the worship services. By mid-November the "Church of Promise" name was adopted.

In January of 1998, worship services transitioned to be held in a rented farmhouse, with services led by members of the group and visiting pastors. It was Easter Sunday of 1998 that the group held a special membership service at their Easter Sunrise service, with all officially joining.

As the congregation grew, there was a need for more room, so a temporary building was erected on the rental property in 2001. A new building was constructed in 2012 on property owned by the church. It was 5 years ago on the first Sunday in December that the first worship service was held in the permanent location at 3125 Hwy. D-65 in rural Buckingham, at the long-vacated site of the Geneseo School. The building sits about 1/4 mile west of highway 21. At that first service in the new building, there was no carpet yet, but the reverberation of the singing sounded like "a choir of angels." There was still much work to be done, but by November of 2013 the building was completed and a dedication ceremony was held, including a flag-raising ceremony by all veterans in attendance.

In celebration of the 20th year of founding of Church of Promise, the 5th anniversary of the church building and recognition of all the Pastors who have led the congregation, Church of Promise will meet on Sunday, December 3rd with Worship service at 10:00a.m, led by the current Pastor Stuart Holsing. A light lunch will follow. As is always the case, everyone is welcome to attend.
