Union students visit local non-profit organizations

February 23, 2018
Dysart Reporter

On Friday, February 2, a group of twelve Union High School students had the opportunity to spend the day learning about local non-profits and the work they do in our community. In the morning, we spent time volunteering at the NE Iowa Food Bank, then we dropped off a check for just under $60 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of NE Iowa from a charity penny war that we did before the holidays, and finally, we spent the afternoon serving a meal to people at the Hospitality House, a day time shelter for people who are homeless.

In the two weeks prior to the trip, junior Jenna Steinlage organized a warm clothing drive and our communities donated an abundance of coats, scarves, hats, boots, etc. to the Hospitality House. We were especially touched by the numerous homemade items like scarves, hats, blankets, etc. and also the newly purchased fleece blankets. One community member also donated all of her late husband's clothing including nice, lined jeans and Carhart coats. Thank you to everyone who gave; the items were beginning to be distributed on Friday night at a community meal.
