It may have been a warm Monday in LaPorte City last week, but the fortunes of the Union boys and girls golf teams were mixed against visiting Sumner-Fredricksburg on April 23.

"The weather was ideal-high 60's with little wind," boys coach Ryan Slater said. "Both teams struggled though with the speed of the greens. Chips and putts were running out and hard to judge."

Despite what Slater called "weather woes", the boys pulled off the win over Sumner-Fredericksburg with a team score of 189. Kyle Cowell led the Knights with a score of 44 to medal in first. Caleb Reel followed close with 46, Brandon Stech with a 47 and then three players scoring 52 for Union (Devin Reel, Lincoln Mehlert, and Marc Mahood).

Meanwhile, the ladies were without their number one golfer in Eliie Moore due to sickness. According to coach Mel Barz, other girls had to step up for the team, but were plaqued by inconsisitency all afternoon. Overall, the Union girls scored 285 as a team. The top four scores were Brystal Bergmeier with a 63, Sydney Bucknell with a 69, Kaylin Brustkern 71 and Emma Deaton with a 82.

"Hopefully with the nice weather coming up and getting to play several days in a row, we will get experience that will help us improve," Barz said.

The boys continued their strong play as they competed at the Jesup Golf and Country Club the next day, though Jesup was unable to register a score due to only having two players on the varsity team. Cowell medaled runner-up for Union with a score of 43. The girls later competed at Wapsie Ridge Golf Course on Thursday, April 26. Moore returned to medal first in the event. The Lady Warriors walks away with the team win scoring 253 to Union's 266.
