Four members of the Union Dance team will join 275 of their fellow dancers to perform at a pre-game or halftime show during the girls basketball finals in March.

The Union students selected are freshman Sarah Michael for the halftime show, junior Rebekah Leipold for the pregame show, junior Piper Wiedenhoff for the halftime and junior Molly Niebergall for the halftime show. This will be Niebergall's second consecutive year making the All-Iowa Dance Team.

"As a coach, I am extremely proud of these young ladies, and all Union dancers who put themselves through this process to try out for the All-Iowa Team," Shelby Graveman, the Union Dance Team coach said. "For dancers, making the All-Iowa team is to that of a football player being selected for the Shrine Bowl or a band/chorus student being selected for All-State. They are all huge honors for high school students who are true and passionate to their craft."

All-Iowa Honor Dance team auditions were held Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 25 and 26 for teams who are members of the Iowa State Dance Team Association (ISDTA), and schools can send up to 6 dancers to attend the tryouts. According to Graveman, the tryout process can be very stressful as they learn almost two minutes of choreography, work to perfect the routine, and try out in front of a panel of ISDTA judges, all essentially in a 6 hour time frame.

"It is an extremely stressful day for dancers, but making the team is a priceless payoff," Graveman said.

From February 28 to March 2, coaches and dancers will travel to Des Moines, where they will continue to learn choreography for either the pre-game performance or the 9 minute half-time show that they were selected for.
