Union High School will see a brand new face walking its hallways next school year as Jason Toenges has been selected as 9-12 Principal starting this summer.

"I feel very blessed to have this opportunity and really look forward to getting to know people in Dysart and La Porte City," Toenges said. "I look forward to working with everyone and build on the great traditions already established in this school district."

Toenges comes to Union after several years as the K-4 and 9-12 Principal as well as Technology coordinator for the shared MMCRU School District in northwest Iowa. A graduate of the University of Iowa, Toenges has taught in St. Louis and Houston before returning to Iowa as an Instructional Coach. He has a Masters Degree from Lamar University in Beaumont, TX. He and his wife Lindsay have three children-Haden, Kayla and Paden-and are looking to move to the area as soon as their school year ends.

"We were looking to move to a job a little closer to family in Cedar Rapids, so when this position became open we thought this would be a great opportunity," Toenges said. "I have mutual friends of Mr. Fleshner and he indicated to me this was a great school district, great area. I grew up in Algona and I wanted to live in a smaller community like Dysart or La Porte City."

Union staff held an interview session with Toenges when he was selected as a finalist. Toenges was given a tour by Assistant Principal Wayne Slack and spoke with current principal Jim Cayton. During the process, Toenges wanted to make his emphasis on relationships with students and staff a big part of his presentation and states he wants to bring his value on relationships to Union.

"I want to spend a good portion of my first year learning about the campus, the staff and the students before I come in and make any major changes," Toenges said. "Unless there's something that's brought to my attention that needs to be fixed immediately, I feel it's best to learn what support they need from me at first. From my conversations with Mr. Slack and Mr. Cayton, there isn't anything major to address coming into this position."

Toenges hopes to move into the area in late July or early August to give him a month to get acclimated to the school. He hopes to attend several community events in both Dysart and La Porte City before the school year, but first he and his wife are searching for a house in the district. When not working, Toenges enjoys running, reading, spending time with his young family and golfing.

"I am very very excited for Jason to join us here at Union as our new high school principal," Superintendent Travis Fleshner said. "His experience as a principal will be a great asset as we continue to move forward with the path we've set on here at Union."

The appointment comes after Cayton announced this past trimester he would retire after three years as the high school principal. Toenges's hiring was approved by Union Board of Education during their monthly meeting on Monday, April 8.
