The Union baseball team claimed their first win of the 2019 season as they resumed a postponed game at Hudson on Monday, January 17, winning the first of a doubleheader 5-4 before falling 4-0 in the second game.

Resuming play tied at 2-2 and one out in the fifth, the Pirates later scored two runs in the sixth inning to extend their lead before their out. The Knights had lost five or their previous six games by a single run, and were ready to make the jump into the W column. In the top of the seventh, Henry Powers delivered a hit down center to send three Knights home and overtake the host Pirates 5-4 before three outs. Powers also came up clutch defensively with two outs at first base to deliver the first Knights win.

"We feel good after this win because we've been in a lot of close games as of late," coach Robert Driscol said. "It was a quick game with play suspended in the fifth inning and we had to come out to be ready to play. Luckily we did."

Henry Powers batted in three teammates to go up 5-4 against Hudson on Monday.

The second game didn't come as kindly to the Knights as the Pirates were given walks and sent home twice. As it had all season, runs proved to be Union's struggle while their defense held the Pirates scoreless in four innings. The first and fourth innings combined provided the home team four runs and a lead they were able to hold onto for the entirety of the evening.

"These kids know they've played good baseball as of late, so I was hoping that first win would carry over into the second game," Driscol said. "Murray for Hudson threw well to keep us off stride. Hopefully this win proves to our boys if we pitch well, play well defensively and scrap runs together, our confidence will grow for these upcoming games."

Union next traveled to Columbus for a doubleheader on Wednesday before hosting Vinton-Shellsburg on Friday, June 21. The Knights will face Denver on the road on Monday, June 24. Union baseball is 1-11 on the season.
