Joe Hoeg of rural Clutier and The Maschhoffs hosted an open house for Hoeg's state-of-the-art pig farm in Clutier on Friday, Jan. 31, allowing guests to see the facility and enjoy food/refreshments.

"I've worked several different places, but I love being able to control my environment and control my own destiny," Hoeg said. "This opportunity is very exciting for me."

Hoeg got into agriculture helping out on his uncle's farm raising pigs and has remained in pig farming ever since. The Tama County native got into raising market hogs and wanted to take on more responsibility as began working for a neighbor. When The Maschhoffs LLC approached them about setting up a pig farm, Hoeg jumped at the opportunity more than a year ago. The new 100 x 193 sq ft solid-sided barn can hold 2,400 to 5,800 pigs depending on their age and features heaters, track load outs, and an internet-based controller.

Joe Hoeg is the new state-of-the-art pig farm in rural Clutier. According to Hoeg approximately 2,400 full grown hogs can be held in the facility at any one time.

"The solid side walls is a new concept and tunnel design," Hoeg said. "The big hope is to have the manure take away cost for commercial fertilizer for my crop ground acres."

Neighbors and area farmers were invited to the open house, where they were given tours and food. Estimates were more than 200 people pass through and organizers ran out of food.

The Maschhoffs LLC is the largest family-owned pork company in the country and is active in Iowa to meet customer's demand. The company spoke with Hoeg to discuss financing off a new pig farm in the area and worked with him through approvals and contracted Integrity Builders on the solid-sided barn.

"We've seen reduce of LP usage by 50-60 percent with these barns and more efficient heat for the little pigs," Chad Heisdorffer, Business Development Manager for The Maschhoffs said. "There's lots of state-of-the-art features here we're proud to show off. These open houses are a great opportunity for folks to come and see the barn is like from the inside to gain a better understanding of what is taking place. We had a great day today."
